Greenpower Education Trust is delighted to unveil more details about its celebrations for its 20th anniversary year. Alongside the Hull Street Race – the UK’s first-ever electric closed road race taking place on Sunday 28 April– Greenpower has a number of exciting events lined up for 2019, including a very special tour of the UK.

Since 1999, Greenpower has challenged young people between the ages of 9 and 25 to design, build and race their own fully electric single seater cars. Its mission has always been to inspire young people to pursue STEM studies and careers through the excitement of motorsport. The first event was originally intended to be a one-off event at Goodwood race course in October of that year.

After the success of that first encounter the challenge has gone from strength to strength: the trust now works with over 700 teams in the UK and 10,000 students every year from primary age to university and apprenticeships, with a growing number of international teams participating in the USA, China, India, Singapore, Malaysia and Poland under the Greenpower licence.

This year, Silverstone Circuit will play host to the Greenpower International Finals on 17 October – exactly 20 years to the day of the first Greenpower event.

Greenpower supplies teams in its three categories (Goblins, IET Formula 24 and IET Formula 24+) with their own age-appropriate kit cars. At the beginning of 2019, neatly coinciding with the 20th anniversary, the 1000th Greenpower kit car was produced. This chassis has been retained by Greenpower and spray-painted gold, and is soon to embark upon a tour of the UK from Cornwall to Scotland. Along the way, it will drive across the Humber Bridge in Hull, visit the Ford UK headquarters and be kitted with VR for a truly immersive experience, and travel in a Cornish air ambulance.

Now more than ever, action is needed to tackle the engineering skills shortage both at home in the UK and abroad. The Royal Academy of Engineering estimates that the UK needs 104,000 STEM graduates, and 56,000 technicians per year. Giving young people a unique hands-on experience of real-world applications has proven successful in bringing more people into the industry, with a number of past Greenpower challenge alumni now working in STEM careers.

CEO of Greenpower Education Trust, Paul van Veggel said: “It’s been a busy start to our 20th anniversary year and it’s set to continue in that trend – but we wouldn’t have it any other way! We’re pleased to be able to share our ambitions plans for this year. The Hull Street Race and the Silverstone International Finals are two of many highlights on our event calendar this year. We’re hoping to attract a lot of attention with our gold 1000th chassis, and we encourage people to follow its progress on our social media channels.

“All of us at Greenpower are keen to share our mission, and our achievements in the time we have been operating, with a wider audience in our 20th anniversary year. It’s crucial we take decisive action now on the skill shortage in the UK. STEM careers can be wide ranging, creative, but more importantly will be vital in solving the problems of tomorrow. We believe the Greenpower challenge has proved a small, yet incredibly successful, method of introducing young people to real-world engineering applications, and encouraging them to work in the industry after completing their education.”
